How to Sooth your Gums and Clean your Teeth

As you might imagine, I make my own tooth scrub. Dental health is largely hereditary so I’m screwed. I’ve brushed, flossed, rinsed, repeated my whole life. I wore a mouthful of metal for 5 years - my teeth were that unfortunate! All this to have red inflamed gums that have required the most unpleasant surgery on Earth. I’d rather nail my foot to a seesaw than watch my mouth get sliced open again while I’m not really anesthetized. I’m tooth traumatized, to say the least.

So when I read about remineralizing tooth powder, I was willing to give it a shot. That was one year ago. I wish I took pictures because my results are insane. I used to have painful canker sores and inflammation around my gum tissue. Even though I have biannual professional cleanings, I would get irritating plaque build up. Not anymore. Most national brand toothpastes have a slew of cheap, unhealthy ingredients that contribute to irritation. Obviously, tooth brushing is important and ya ‘gotta do it but, like so many related products, we can do it better, healthier, safer.

Top toxins in commercial toothpaste include: sodium lauryl sulfate, triclosan, propylene glycol, and DEA. Most of the stuff that causes our products to foam are the same that contribute to hormonal disruption, cancer, and kidney/liver damage. It’s tough to accept that what we trust is harming us - I get that. But it’s true so I’m sharing my tooth powder recipe. Yes, powder. Dip your brush in and get a pea size amount (give or take a pea) and apply directly to teeth then apply water to get the powder into a paste. I know it sounds weird but you’ve gotten used to stranger things so just do it. Brush brush brush. Rinse. You’re good - xoxo!

Mix the following in a glass jar and store until ready to use:

3T calcium carbonate

2T bentonite clay

½ tsp xylitol

10 drops peppermint or spearmint essential oil

*Note: I buy small ½ ounce containers for each family member in case anyone does something gross with theirs.
